Herbert Been

Herbert Varney Been, 99, of rural Delphi, passed away March 23, 2023, at the home of his daughter, Cindi Anderson, where he had been residing.
Born February 11, 1924, near Burrows, Indiana, he was the son of Paul Been and Beatrice Gardner Been.  He married Mildred Lucille Allen, of Logansport, on April 8, 1950;  she preceded him in death on March 14, 2015. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Richard Been, and a sister, Martha Justice.  A sister, Marjorie Reynolds, of Logansport, survives.
Herbert was a 1942 graduate of Delphi High School, a World War II veteran, a farmer raising crops, hogs, cattle, and sheep throughout his farming years.  He was also a construction inspector and state superintendent who completed such jobs as St. Thomas Aquinas Church in West Lafayette, the state prison in Michigan City , and the remodeling of the Indiana State House.
In retirement, Herbert loved to garden and to build furniture for his family in his woodworking shop.
Herbert and Mildred had three children: Paula Been Foster, Cindi Been Anderson (Tom - deceased), and Jeff Been (Eric Graninger); and, five grandchildren: Justin Foster (Ciara), Martha Anderson Long (Daniel), Benjamin Anderson (Amanda), Samuel Herbert Anderson-Been (Laura), and Lily Anderson-Chavarria (Melissa).  Thirteen  great-grandchildren blessed his life.
Herbert and Mildred were members of the Burrows Presbyterian Church and also attended the First Christian Church at Delphi in their later years.
The family will receive friends beginning at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, April 1, at the Burrows Presbyterian Church.  Service will be at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Tom Covington (Guardian Angel Hospice) officiating.  Burial at Brown Church Cemetery will immediately follow. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to the Brown Church Cemetery Association, c/o Kathy Zink, 8745 N 150 W, Delphi, IN 46923.  Herbert and Mildred were long-time caretakers of the cemetery.
