Caren Smith (Burton) - Class Of 1958

Caren Smith (Burton)

Caren C. Smith Burton, 67, of Delphi, passed away June 6, 2007, at 8:30 a.m. at Home Hospital in Lafayette.  She had been a patient there for the past nine days and had battled cancer for eight years.
She was born Jan. 19, 1940, in Lafayette to the late Charles A. Smith and H. Jane Goslee Smith, who survives.  Her marriage was to Dean O. Burton in Delphi on June 8, 1958, and he survives.
Mrs. Burton was a 1958 graduate of Delphi High School.  She farmed with her husband in Carroll County' Madison Township and helped raise hogs on the family farm.  She also worked seasonally at the Carroll County License Branch and DeDe Cosmetics Boutique in Lafayette.
She was very active at Delphi United Methodist Church as a communion steward, Sunday School teacher, Vacation Bible School teacher, and a member of the Wesley Wed Sunday School class.
Mrs. Burton was a member of Dolly Madison Extension Homemakers Club, enjoyed participating in drama skits with Delphi Public Library, and was a former secretary of Psi Iota Xi Sorority.
She was also very active with the Carroll County Republican Party, serving as a secretary for the central committee for many years and as a precinct committee woman.
She enjoyed her winter home in Long Boat Key, Fla., and was involved with clubs and activities there.  She volunteered her time educating and mentoring women undergoing cancer treatment as a breast cancer fund-raising contact.
Mrs. Burton loved her family dearly.  They were everything to her.  It was her hobby to surround herself with them constantly.
Surviving are two sons, Brad Burton (wife: Gail) and Brian Burton (wife: Jayne), all of Delphi; a sister Alexis Glowe (husband: Doug) of Rochester Hills, Mich.; a brother, Steve Smith (wife: Judy) of Delphi; and four grandchildren, Blaine, Grant, Mara and Andrew Burton.
Services were held Saturday at Delphi United Methodist Church, officiated by Pastor Todd Ladd.  Burial was at Masonic Cemetery, Delphi.
The family strongly suggests that memorial contributions be made to Carroll County Cancer Association or Delphi United Methodist Church.  Envelopes are available at the funeral home.
Abbott Funeral Home in Delphi was in charge of arrangements.

Patricia Toole (Porter) (1958)

Caren was one of the 'spark plugs' of the class of '58'. She died June 6, 2007 of cancer. The beautiful smile on her face, her friendship, her large earrings and her 'bounciness' are truly missed by many people, including her friends 'the Golden Girls'. Caren was truly one of a kind. Miss you, Toots.
