David Smith - Class Of 1970

David Glenn Smith, 25, of 114 1/2 E. Main St., Delphi, a self-employed plumber and contractor, was killed at 3:03 a.m. Saturday, February 26, 1977, two days after his 25th birthday, when his 1970 pickup truck crashed into a cement post at the intersection of C.R. 1150-W and 200-N.
  Carroll County Coroner James Sullivan said Smith died at the scene from a skkull fracture and a crushed chest.  This was the second traffic fatality of 1977 in Carroll County.
  Carroll County Police Officer Doyle Clark and State Trooper John Elmore, investigating officers, said Smith was southbound on 1150-W when he failed to make a curve in the road and struck a cement post on the west side.  The right side of the truck was almost competely wrapped around the post after the accident.
  The Tippecanoe County Rescue Squad assisted in extracting Smith from the vehicle which was a total loss.  Tri Township firemen were called to the scene because of gasoline on the highway.
  About 50 ft. of fence belonging to Charles Childers, Rt. 2, Delphi, was damaged $100.  The accident occurred near the James Hufford home on Rt. 2, Delphi, and the Huffords notified the sheriff's office.
  Smith was born February 24, 1952, at Independance, Mo., the son of David Richard and Betty Lou Hazlett Smith.  A 1970 graduate of Delphi Community High School, he was a member of Sons of the Delphi American Legion and Delphi Jaycees.
  Surviving with his mother, Mrs. Betty Lou Smith, of Delphi are two brothers, Darrell Lynn Smith and Derek Lee Smith, both of Delphi; one sister, Leveda Ann Smith of Monticello; paternal grandmother, Mrs. Dern Smith of Brethren;s Home at Flora; and maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. E.G. Hazlett of Folsom, Calif.
  Funeral services were Monday afternoon at Thompson Funeral Home in Delphi.  The Rev. Thomas Rush officiated and interment was in Hickory Grove Cemetery.
