George Wood

George William Wood, 89, of Monticello, passed away at 3:15 am, Monday, February 22, 2016 at Tampa General Hospital in Tampa, Florida.

He was born on January 20, 1927 in Delphi to the late William R. and Josephine (Chapman) Wood.

On January 3, 1948 he married Rosella Mossburg in Cass County, Indiana.

Rosella preceded George in death February 24, 1996.

He later married the former Sarah Sigman and she survives.

He grew up in Carroll County and his grandparents had a major role and influence in his rearing. He was a graduate of Delphi High School. He was a veteran of the United States Navy Seabees and served during the tail end of World War II. He was stationed in Guam, Hawaii, and Fife.

He was able to return to Guam and Hawaii.

George almost always worked more than one job.

Included among his many places of employment was Clayborne Manufacturing and NIPSCO. He started as a laborer with NIPSCO, then advanced to a welder, and finally transferred to Electric Operations as a substation electrician from which he retired. He painted and also built houses.

Until the time of his death, he managed the mowing business in partnership with his son.

He was a member of the Knights of Columbus St.

John Neumann Council #6955 of Monticello and a member of First Family of Carroll County.

At a very young age, he discovered his passion for fishing. He received his pilot’s license after his discharge from the Navy and enjoyed flying until his heart bypass surgery which no longer allowed him to fly.

He went on the Honor Flight in April of 2013 and was extremely moved by the experience.

He is also survived by his children, Teresa “Terry” (husband, Charles) Brown of New Richmond, Randy Wood (companion, Sherry Wagner) of Monticello; grandchildren, Aaron (Tina) Brown and Christopher (Julie) Brown; and great-grandchildren, Mariah, Lauren, Claire, and Kane.

In addition to his first wife, Rosella he was also preceded in death by an infant son, Roger and toddler son, Norman; and siblings, Joseph, Ruth, and Maurice. Visitation and a Mass of Christian Burial took place on Friday, February 27 and Saturday, February 28, 2016.

Burial followed at the St.

Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Delphi with full military rites.

Memorial contributions may be given to Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic Church or to St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery in Delphi with envelopes available at the funeral home.
