William S. Smith

William S. "Bill" Smith Jr. 79, of Rt. 4, Delphi, died at 4:30 a.m. Aug. 26, 1996, at his home. Born Feb. 15, 1917, in Polson, Mont., he was the son of William S. Sr. and Maud Sakrison Smith. His marriage was on Nov. 23, 1946, in Delphi, to Shirley H. Liebert, who died July 25, 1995. A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he served in New Guinea, South Philippines, and Luzon from 1942-1945. He worked for the Delphi Stone Quarry and then owned and operated Smith Excavating in Delphi for many years, retiring in 1976. He was a 1935 graduate of Delphi High School. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, American Legion Post 75, and Mount Olive Masonic Lodge 48, all in Delphi; and the Scottish Rite Valley of Indianapolis. Surviving are one son Stephen M. Smith of Rt. 4, Delphi, and two grandsons. Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Horn Funeral Home with Rev. Ellis Gasser Officiating. Burial will be in the Masonic Cemetery, Delphi, with American Legion rites. Carroll County Comet, August 28, 1996
