Dorothy Smith (Mason) - Class Of 1939

Yoder-Culp Funeral Home 5/29/2015 Dorothy H. Mason, 91, died May 21, 2015 passed away at Timbercrest Senior Living Community, North Manchester, where they were residents. Dorothy was born April 4, 1924 in Ping Ting, China to Harlan and Frances (Sheller) Smith. She married James H. Mason on July 13, 1952 in Fort Wayne. Dorothy graduated from Manchester University in 1945 and worked as an elementary and early education school teacher. James served in Civilian Public Service from 1942 to 1946. He received his bachelor’s degree from Bridgewater College in 1948, followed by a degree in Occupational Therapy from the Richmond Professional Institute. Before retiring in North Manchester, James and Dorothy lived in Elkhart, where they were active members in the Elkhart City Church of the Brethren and James worked as an occupational therapist with the Oaklawn Mental Health Center. Both will be remembered as avid gardeners and dedicated and loving parents, grandparents and great grandparents. Survivors include three children, Andrea J. (Ted) Taylor of LaPorte, Patrice J. Mason of Kalamazoo, Michigan and Craig E. Mason of Seattle, Washington; seven grandchildren, Stephanie (Jeremy) Ruff of Elkhart, Craig Miller of St Louis, Missouri, Molly (Justin) Gullman and Megan Boley, both of Chicago, Max Taylor of Los Angeles, California, Miles Taylor of Washington D.C., and Jordan Hochstetler of Kalamazoo, Michigan and five great-grandchildren. Dorothy is survived by four siblings, Pauline Delk, Shirley (Jim) Mishler, both of North Manchester, Edward (Jean) Smith of Naperville, Illinois and Maurine Weaver of Tucson, Arizona. Dorothy was preceded in death by two brothers, Lloyd and Dwight Smith and a sister, Helen Hiteshew. A memorial service will be conducted Saturday, June 20, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. in the chapel at Timbercrest Senior Living Community, North Manchester. In lieu of flowers or other gifts, the family would appreciate donations to Heifer International or Timbercrest Senior Living Community. Burial will follow be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, North Manchester
