Charles Merrell - Class Of 1964

Charles A. Merrell, 77, passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 4, 2024, at his home in Tarpon Springs, Florida.  Charles was born to the late John and Betty (Rensky) Merrell, in Lafayette, Indiana on June 24, 1946, and lived most of his childhood in Delphi, Indiana where he was active in sports before moving to Lafayette and graduating from Jefferson High School. After high school, he attended Sams Technical Institute in Indianapolis where he received a degree in Architectural Engineering Technology.

On October 26, 1968, he married the love of his life, Geraldine (White) Merrell and she survives. They had a wonderful 55 years together.  Shortly after their marriage, Chuck joined the Army and was stationed in beautiful Hawaii. During the years in Hawaii, Chuck enjoyed hobbies such as surfing and scuba diving. Upon discharge from the Army, Chuck began working in the family business at Merrell’s Town and Country Real Estate. He continued in the sales field for many years, including manager at Ziebart of Lafayette, until a career change to manufacturing when he became the manager at Auto Warehousing located at SIA. Chuck was a lifelong member of the American Legion Post 11.

Chuck and Geri have made many friends over the years and always enjoyed boating and skiing on Lake Shafer.  After retirement, they spent their time between Monticello, Indiana, and Tarpon Springs, Florida.  Chuck kept busy during retirement by cheering on the Boilers, golfing, fishing, and driving the Shafer Queen.

Surviving along with his wife include his son; David (Micki) Merrell of Lafayette, IN, daughter; Jennifer (Paul) Andrews of Fuquay Varina, NC, grandchildren; Jordan Andrews, Logan Andrews, Ireland Andrews, Parker Andrews, Chase Merrell, Tyler Merrell, Cooper Merrell, brother; William (Mick) Merrell of Fishers, IN, sister; Jan Riley of Sarasota, FL, and sister-in-law Judy Merrell of Clearwater, FL. 

Chuck was preceded in death by a stepmother Helen Merrell, brothers; Stephen Merrell, and Tom Merrell. 

A funeral service honoring the life of Charles will be held on Saturday, January 13, 2023, at Davidson-Shirey Funeral Home, located at 121 N. Union Street, Delphi, IN, at 1 pm with Pastor Bob Duke Officiating. Friends may visit with the family from 11 am until the time of the service. Burial will follow at Masonic Cemetery where Military Rites will be performed.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Charles honor to the American Lung Association.
