Mary Lynn Orr (Weaver) - Class Of 1955

Mary Lynn Orr (Weaver)

Mary Lynn Weaver, 80, Logansport, passed away at 1:44 p.m. on Saturday, July 7, 2018, surrounded by her family at St. Vincent Hospital, Indianapolis.

Born in Lafayette on Oct. 25, 1937, she was the daughter of Ray and Helen Cohee Orr, who raised her in the city of Delphi. There, she attended Delphi Community High School, and met her husband, Joseph (Joe) E. Weaver. They were married on Aug. 5, 1962 and would be celebrating 56 years of marriage this coming August.
Mary devoted 56 years to educating and helping others in the field of nursing. She began her career while still a high school student, working alongside the Health Officer of Carroll County. From there, she pursued her nursing degree at the Methodist Hospital School of Nursing, graduating in 1958. Developing an early passion for diabetic patients in private practice in Indianapolis, she would continue on her journey in medicine to Logansport Memorial Hospital, where she worked as a registered nurse from 1966 to 1999, devoting her skills to the education of diabetic patients as a staff nurse and staff development and infection control coordinator.
After retirement, she brought her years of experience to the surgical office of Dr. Todd S. Weinstein, MD., before officially retiring from the field.
Mary is survived by her husband, Joe, Logansport; daughters, Mary Catherine "Cathy" Samuels (Dale), Logansport, and Elizabeth Anne "Beth" Weaver, Indianapolis; grandchildren, Megan Samuels, Indianapolis, Cameron Samuels, Lafayette, and Erin Samuels, Muncie; brother, John Orr (Sandy), Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; and several nieces and nephews.
Even in her spare time, Mary devoted herself to helping others. She was an active board member of the American Red Cross for many years, was president of the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology Inc., APIC Indiana Chapter #76, gave her time as a Blood Bank volunteer and spent Sundays at church, often volunteering her skills taking blood pressure before and after services.
Mary was a active member of the Alpha Mu Chapter of Kappa Kappa Kappa sorority for over 50 years, most notably known for her dedication to the Mental Health Committee. She was on the District Level of Tri Kappa, chairing the Hilda Bowen Nursing Scholarship committee, which awards scholarship funds to outstanding nursing students in the local area.
When she wasn't helping others, Mary enjoyed traveling, solving crossword puzzles, attending concerts and musicals, shopping for shoes and spending time with family and friends.
Mary will be remembered as a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and nurse.
A Tri Kappa Memorial Service will be conducted at 3 p.m., on Saturday, July 14, 2018, with the funeral service immediately following. Both services will be at Calvary Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Chuck Compton will officiate at the funeral.
Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery.
