Helen M. Rider Van Der Volgen, 81, of Delphi, died at 1 a.m. March 18, 1999, at her daughter's residence, where she had made her home for the last three years.
  Born Feb. 26, 1918, in Carroll County, she was the daughter of Floyd and Iva Howell Rider.  Her marriage was on Nov. 26, 1940, to Lawrence F. Van Der Volgen, on their farm in Carroll County.  He died Dec. 23, 1994.
  She was a homemaker and farmed with her husband in Jefferson Township.  She also worked as a cook at the Parish Pioneer Farm near Idaville.
  Mrs. Van Der Volgen was a 1936 graduate of Delphi High School and a graduate of Fox Beauty School in Kokomo.  She operated her own beauty shop in Rossville for two years.
  She was a 50-year member of the Hickory Grove United Church of Christ, where she belonged to the Women's Fellowship, and was a board member and past secretary of the Carroll County Historical Society.  She also was a member of Wabash & Erie Canal, Inc., was past worthy matron of the Order of Eastern Star in Delphi from 1972 to 1973, and a member of the Modern Mrs. Extension Homemakers Club and the Delphi Preservation Society.  She enjoyed pioneer cooking and costumes, quilting, doll making and candle making.
  Surviving are one daughter, Mary E. Chatfield of Delphi; three brothers, Keith Rider of Monticello, Russell Rider, of Georgia, and Leo Rider of Delphi; a nephew, Byron Rider, whom she raised in her home; and one grandson.  She was preceded in death by one daughter.
  A gathering of family and friends will take place at the home of her daughter on March 25, from 4-8 p.m. with private family burial.  Abbott Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
  Memorials may be made to St. Elizabeth Hospice and Home Care.
