John D. Smith, 70, of Delphi died at 11:30 p.m. Oct. 6,1988, at St Elizabeth Healthcare Center, Delphi.
  Born Jan.20, 1918, in Carroll County, he was the son of John Atkinson and Mary Dixon Smith.  He was married May 23, 1941, in Delphi to Helen Thomson, and she survives.
  He was a 1936 graduate of Delphi High School and served in the Army in World War II.
  He worked for the Indiana Department of Highways, Monticello District, from 1960 until he retired in 1987.  Before that, he was associated with his family's dairy business in Delphi from 1941 until it closed in 1953.  Known as Smith Dairy, the business was founded in 1888.
  Smith was a member of the Delphi Presbyterian Church and enjoyed woodworking.
  Surviving with his wife is one daughter, Mary Ann Hoffman, of Tallahassee, Fla.
  Services were Monday at Horn Funeral Home with Rev. Ellis Gasser and Rev. James Rankin officiating.  Burial was in Masonic Cemetery, Delphi.
