Harry "Gene" Hughes, 61, 4418 West Dunes Highway, The Pines, Michigan City, died Tues. August 25, 1981, at 2:30 a.m. unexpectedly of an apparent heart attack.
  Born in Delphi May 27, 1920, he was the son of William Earl and Hester Weeker Hughes.  His marriage in Delphi on November 19, 1938, was to Helen Scott.  He was graduated from Delphi High School.  He lived in Delphi until 1955.  A veteran of World War II, he served in the Navy.  He was retired from the U.S. Steel Corporation in Gary.
  Surviving with the wife are his father, William Earl Hughes of Delphi; two sons, Brad and Rick Hughes, both of Michigan City; two daughters, Mrs. Fred (Marlene) Collins of Delphi and Mrs. John (Anita) Flaitz of Ft. Myers, Fla.; two brothers, Donald Hughes of Chicago and Robert Hughes of Delphi; two sisters, Mrs. Carl (Joanne) Shockley of Delphi and Mrs. Francis (Millie) Hahn of Lafayette; and six grandchildren.
  Funeral services will be Friday at 1 p.m. at Thompson Funeral Home with the Rev. George Troyer, officiating.  Burial will be in Morning Heights Cemetery with military graveside services.
  Friends may call at the funeral home Thursday from 3 to 9 p.m.
