Mike Jones

G. Michael "Coach" Jones, 82, formerly of Delphi, died unexpectedly Wed-July 26, 2017 at 5:51am at St Elizabeth East Hospital, Laf. He was born Nov 19, 1934 in Falfurrias, TX, to the late Herman & Irene Pierce Jones. His marriage was to Harriette E. Sullivan in Oxford, on Feb 20, 1954, and she preceded him in death on Feb 10, 2003. He graduated from Pine Village High School in 1953; received his BS in education from ISU in 1959; received his MA in education from IU; and received a soil science degree from PU later in his life. He started his teaching and coaching career at Roachdale High School, teaching biology & coaching boys basketball (1959-1961); then Cathedral High School in Indianapolis (61-64); Rossville High School coaching & teaching, and was Athletic Director (64-78);  Wawasee High School (78-81); and Delphi Community High School, teaching biology, coaching boys basketball, and the girls golf team, 1981 until his retirement in 1992. He was named athlete of the year at ISU 1959, lettering in baseball 4 years & basketball 3 years. After college he was drafted by a pro baseball team, and Indiana's pro basketball team, turning both offers down, to start his teaching, coaching career, and to start his family. He was inducted into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame in 2005. He was a member of the IN State Teachers Assoc., & IN Basketball Coaches Assoc.  He served 4 years in the IN National Guard. He was a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church, Delphi. After his retirement from teaching, he did soil testing for Carroll and other surrounding counties, and was a member of the Professional Soil Science Classifiers Assoc. He had just recently moved to Mulberry, after living in Delphi since 1981. He enjoyed woodworking, flower gardening, golf, and his koi pond. He remained in close contact with his many former players and special students, long after their graduations. He was a devoted husband and father, and dearly loved his family and grandchildren, and the times they shared together. He and his wife enjoyed wintering in Mexico for many years. Surviving: daughters-Ramona & Jeff Bass of Mulberry, Rene & Mamoun Hariri of Delphi; sons-Kristopher Jones of Frankfort, Shannon Jones of Mulberry; sisters-Joyce Wiltbank of Miromar Lakes, FL, Mary Lee Hamilton of Lafayette, Shelia McCloskey of Davidsonville, Maryland; brothers-Shannon & Cecilia Jones of Walton, Shane & CeeAnn Jones of Fowler; 10 grandchildren 2 great grandchildren. Preceded in death by sisters Janet & JoAnn; brothers James & Patrick. Services: friends may call Sunday from 3pm-7pm at Abbott Funeral Home, Inc., Delphi. Funeral mass Monday at 10am at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Delphi; Father Clayton Thompson officiating. Burial at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Delphi.
