S uzanne L. Spitler Hathaway, 85, formerly of Delphi, passed away with her children by her side following a brief illness on Friday, September 12, 2025, 1:15am, at IU Health Arnett Hospital in Lafayette. Suzanne was born on January 31, 1940, in Logansport, to the late Truman & Reba Walker Spitler. Her marriage was to Charles Richard “Dick” Hathaway in Flora, on August 23,1959, and he preceded her in death on February 5, 1997. Suzanne graduated from Delphi High School in 1958. She was a homemaker and bookkeeper for she and her husband's business, Delphi Auto Machine Shop. She worked at the Carroll County Abstract Company for many years. She was a secretary at the Delphi High and Middle Schools and also was a nurse’s aide at Hillcrest Elementary which gave her immense joy seeing “their precious little faces” walk into the office needing a bandage or some encouragement. She was a pure nurturer and many times said that if the job existed, she would have chosen to hold and rock babies all day. Suzanne was a member of the Living Faith Church of the Brethren near Flora. She played the piano there and sang in the church choir. She also volunteered at their church food tent during the Carroll County 4-H fair and participated in the women’s bible study group. She knitted hats for the needy and dispersed them locally. She made enough hats that many of them made their way to children in Michigan. She enjoyed music and on weekend mornings her children were often awakened by the sound of her at the piano. She played with a talent and an exuberance that maybe sometimes rushed the tempo of the piece, but this made it hers and also made it more remarkable as her fingers hit every note. Suzanne had a contagious smile and never met a stranger. You always came away feeling better after having a conversation with her. She was kind, caring, and always willing to help those in need. Maybe most impressively, she maintained a steadfast positivity which demonstrated her understanding that, in this life, your setbacks and sufferings are not limited by the amount of kindness you give the world. She dearly loved the Lord and his plan of salvation. Her family was everything to her. She dearly loved them all. They were her life. Surviving: daughter-Lisa & Jeff Hamm of Knightstown, daughter-Bethany & Mark Foster of Delphi, son-Alec T. Hathaway of Delphi, brother-Phil & Carol Spitler of Kokomo, 3 grandchildren: Justin & Ashley Hamm, Daisha & Greg Arthur, Keith & Kyla Foster, 15 great grandchildren, & 7 great great grandchildren survive. Preceded in death by her 3-year-old son Todd, 2 sisters Connie & Joyce. Services: Visitation will be Thursday from 5pm to 8pm at Abbott Funeral Home, Inc., Delphi.
