Norman Lee "Norm" Ebrite, 77, of Delphi, died at 6:50 a.m., Dec. 15, 1998, at Lee Memorial Health Park Medical Center in Fort Myers, Fla.  He and his wife wintered in Bonita Springs, Fla.
  Born April 26, 1921, in Muncie, he was the son of Nathan I. and Clara Stradling Ebrite.  He married Faye Burns on Jan. 26, 1949, in Russiaville, and she survives.
  Mr. Ebrite was a 1939 graduate of Burris High School in Muncie, received his B.S. degree in industrial arts in 1943 and his mater's degree in educational administration in 1950, both from Ball State Teachers College.
  His first teaching job was at Hope High School in Bartholomew County.  He taught industrial arts and coached basketball and track.
  He came to Delphi High School in 1948 and taught industrial arts and social studies.  He coached football, basketball, track, and cross country.  In September, Mr. Ebrite was honored at a 50th anniversary celebration, commemorating Delphi's first varsity football team, which he coached.
  In 1960, he was named Indian Industrial Arts Teacher of the Year by the Indiana Industrial Arts Education Association; in 1971, he was named Delphi Teacher of the Year by Delphi American Legion Post 75; and in 1980, was named both Indiana Coach of the Year by the Indiana High School Coaches Association, and Indiana Athletic Direction of the Year.  He was inducted into Delphi Community High School's Wall of Fame in 1984.
  Mr. Ebrite retired from Delphi Community School Corporation in 1984 as athletic director.
  He served in the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1946 and received his ensign commission after attending Northwestern University in Chicago.  He was assigned to the coastal patrol unit of the 13th Naval District, working in the Straits of Juan de Fuca near Neah Bay, Wash.  He later was commissioned Lieutenant JG and made flag secretary to the Commander of the Marshall-Gilberts area.  He was involved in efforts relating to Operation Crossroads, the first atomic experiment at Bikini Atol in the Marshall Islands.
  Mr. Ebrite was a 53-year member of the Delphi American Legion Post 75; was past president of the Delphi Lions Club, a member of the Carroll County Country Club, member and past president of the Indiana Industrial Arts Association and a life member of the Indiana Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association.  He received the latter's Meritorious Service Award for service to school, community and school athletics.
  He was an avid fisherman, continued to start track meets at Delphi, and was time keeper for all home football games.  Since 1952, he had placed American flags on veteran's graves on Memorial Day.
  Surviving with his wife are one daughter, Teresa Richards of Kendallville; two sons, Thomas I. "Tie" Ebrite of Naples, Fla., and James L. "Jim" Ebrite of Delphi; twin sisters, Mary Welty and Lucy Dick, both of Dunedin, Fla., and six grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by one brother and two sisters.
  Services were Saturday at Abbott Funeral Home with Rev. Ellis Gasser officiating.  Burial was in IOOF Memorial Gardens, Pittsburg, with Delphi American Legion military rites.
  Memorials may be made to the Delphi Athletic Track Program, American Heart Association, or American Diabetes Association.
