James Moore - Class Of 1970

James Moore

James E. Moore, 18, of Riley Road on Rt. 4, Delphi, suffered a fatal shotgun wound shortly after midnight Saturday.
The incident occured in the three-room apartment of Doug Alspaugh, 19, and Ron Israel, step-brothers.
The apartment is located across from the courthouse in Delphi at 114 1/2 W. Main St., over Pletcher Hardware.
Doug Alspaugh reportedly was handling his 20-gauge pump shotgun when it went off, striking the Moore boy on the right front of his head as he reclined on a couch.  Investigation disclosed Alspaugh was at a distance of about 80 inches from Moore at the time.
Authorities reported the gun was a gift to Alspaugh a couple of years ago.
The only others in the apartment at the time were Tom Schupbach of rural Delphi and Don Smith of Delphi who rused a block and a half to the sheriff's office to report the shooting.
City Police Michael McNaught and Deputy Sheriff Doyle Clark went to the scene where the place was secured.
Chief of Polic Lee Thompson and Sheriff James Coghill were immediately called, along with State Police Technician Dale Rabanus and Detective Oscar Gates.  State Trooper Larry Young also assisted in the investigation which is being continued.
Coroner James R. Sullivan was summoned and ordered an autopsy,

, but has made no ruling as to the death.
Moore and Schupbach, seniors at Delphi Community High School, and Alspaugh and Smith 1969 graduates, reportedly had attended a French Club dance at the school and later went to the apartment.
Alspaugh, an employee of Fairfield Manufacturing Co., at Lafayette, is not being held.
The victim, James E. Moore was born August 28, 1951, Lafayette, the son of Morris T and Helen Roberta Bowman Moore, who survive.
The youth has worked for four years at Dog'n Suds at Delphi.  He was a member of the Varsity Football team of the school, Hi-Y and French Club.  He was a member of Cottage Street Church of Christ.
Surviving with the parents are a maternal grandmother, Mrs. Julia Bowman of Phoenix, Ariz., a brother, Robert T. of Calif., and twin sisters, Judy and Julie both at home.
Funeral services were Wednesday afternoon at Sullivan-Lloyd Funeral Home at Delphi.  Pastor Paul Hines officiated and interment was in Odd Fellows Cemetery at Delphi.
