Anthony Chapman - Class Of 1977

Anthony Chapman

Anthony W. "Tony" Chapman, 18, of Rt. 1, Camden, was Carroll County' first traffic fatality of 1977.  The senior at Delphi Community High School, was killed instantly in a two-vehicle accident at 10:50 p.m. Thurs., Jan. 13, at the intersection of Ind. 18 and C.R. 350-W.
Chapman had competed his studies at DCHS on Thursday, the day of his death, and was a mid-semester graduate.  He reportedly was to take employment Friday.
The youth had been living with his paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Chapman of Rt. 1, Camden, to complete his high school education and temporarily had been staying with his maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Carl E. Carter of Camden, while the Chapmans were vacationing.  His parents, Wayne E. and Evelyn Carter Chapman, moved from Rt. 3, Delphi, to Rt. 1, Greenfield.
State Trooper Kevin Hamilton, Carroll County Police Officers Steve Kohne and Doyle Clark and Carroll County Coroner James R. Sullivan investigated and reported Chapman died of a fractured skull when the 1966 pickup truck he was driving north on C.R. 350-W failed to stop at the intersection and entered in the path of a semi-trailer which was loaded with bathroom fixtures.
The semi-trailer, driven by William A. Dalton, 46, of Xenia, Ohio, was traveling west on Ind. 18, jackknifed and landed 200 ft. from impact, sideways.  The pickup was knocked 100 ft. by the force of the impact and turned over several times, throwing the victim out.
Dalton reportedly had just met two east-bound cars and as the last passed the semi and pickup collided.  The pickup was a total loss.
Officers said the road was icy and snow-covered and an investigation of the accident is continuing by Indiana State Police.
The semi driver suffered minor, lacerations to his head and right foot, but refused treatment at the scene.
The Chapman death was the first vehicle related fatality of 1977 in the county.
Born October 25, 1958, in Logansport, the youth was a member of Camden United Methodist Church.
Surviving with the parents and grand-parents are one brother and three sisters, John, Carla J., Jill W., and Julie L., all of Rt. 1, Greenfield.
Final rites were Sunday afternoon at Sullivan Funeral Home with Rev. Joseph Hornick officiating.  Burial was in Camden Cemetery.

Tony It's been 32 years since I have seen you. I have never forgot you and think of you every year on 1-13-77. I think of all the Camden days, going to the tractor pull and staying out all night. Remember the picnic table???
