James Hugh Clifford IV

J James Hugh Clifford, 62, died peacefully but unexpectedly in his sleep at his home in West Lafayette, Indiana on Saturday, February 18th. He was born December 30, 1960. He was preceded in death by his older brother, Frank Andrew Clifford, died November 2018, his mother, Martha Kerlin Clifford, died December 2019, and his father, James Richard Clifford, died August 1971, as well as some loving dogs: including a maltese named Bunchy, died 2004, and a maltese named Rufus, died 2017. Hugh leaves behind a Goldendoodle named Bailey Bear, and a sister, Suzanne. Both are devastated. He also leaves behind a brother-in-law, Brett James, of Adelaide, Australia, and many supportive cousins, especially David Clifford of West Lafayette and Pat Clifford of Kokomo. Hugh was musical, writing original instrumental songs almost daily that he would finger-pick on his acoustic guitar. He put out an album he called Sonirex in 2003. One song is available at HughClifford.com Hugh also created digital art and was artistic throughout his life. Hugh had a quick wit and was always making jokes on the fly, which made tough times easier to bear. Hugh was always there for his family, acting as a car mechanic, handyman, furniture mover, lawn serviceman, cook, house cleaner and emotional support therapist. We always joked "We have a Hugh", as if Hugh was some multifunctional android everyone would love to have around the house. Hugh attended Delphi Community High School, graduating in 1979. He also attended Ball State University for one year. Hugh spent a few years in San Jose, California in the late 1980s, and lived in Denver, Colorado for 10 years in the 1990s. He lived in an ocean front townhome in Melbourne Beach, Florida for over a year in 2000 & 2001. He also lived for a year in downtown Portland, Oregon in 2001 & 2002. He has lived in West Lafayette the past 16 years. Hugh travelled throughout the US (including Hawaii), and Europe (London, Paris, Amsterdam, Germany, Switzerland) with his sister. He recently gave his sister away when she married. Hugh had a kind heart, which may be why he bonded so closely with his dogs. A year and a half ago, an amazing goldendoodle who Hugh named Bailey Bear, came into his life and the two of them were inseparable to the end. He wanted to see the ocean one more time. His ashes will be scattered off Sand Beach in Acadia National Park, Maine - his favorite place. A celebration of Hugh's, Drew's and Martha's lives will be held in a few months. Richard Denhart (1979)

I had the pleasure to enjoy school and especially football with Hugh at Delphi.  He was a great teammate beside the fact he blocked me on a kickoff our junior year which Coach Berto replayed numerous times on the 8mm game film as I rolled on the ground.  Great memories of a good guy.
