Fred Dean Stokes, 67, of Brookston, died at 5:19 a.m., Saturday, July 28, 2007, at Seton Specialty Hospital in St. Elizabeth Medical Center, Lafayette.  He had been in failing health the past four years.
  Born June 7, 1940, in Delphi, to Mary J. Irelan Stokes of Delphi and the late Elmer Stokes, he was a 1959 graduate of Delphi High School.  He had been a resident of Brookston since 1965.
  He was a veteran of the Army.
  His marriage was to Carolyn L. Dyer on June 28, 1964, in Battle Ground, and she survives.
  Mr. Stokes was a machine operator at TRW Commercial Steering Systems in Lafayette for 25 years.  He had previously worked for the White County Highway Department.
  He was a member of Delphi Christian Church.  His hobbies were working on Cub Cadet lawn tractors and collecting Mickey Mouse memorabilia, and he enjoyed the outdoors and woodworking.
  Surviving with his wife and mother are three sons, Kevin Stokes (wife: Carey) of Burnettsville and Kenny Stokes and Karl Stokes (wife: April), both of Brookston; and one brother, Raymond stokes (wife: Beverly) of Valparaiso.
  Friends may call 4-8 p.m.Tuesday, July 31, at Hartzler-Clapper Funeral Home, Brookston.  Service there 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 1, the Rev. Dr. Lelan McReynolds officiating.  Interment Brookston IOOF Cemetery, 2 grandsons, Mason and Collin Stokes, also survive.  Memorial donations may be made to the Cancer Society.
