George E. Hanaway Jr. affectionately known as “Tuffy” passed away on March 28,2026, leaving behind a legacy of kindness, humor, hard work, and a life well lived. He was born October 13,1937 in Carroll County, near Camden to the late George Sr. and Louva Jones Hanaway.
He graduated from Delphi High School in 1955 and soon after answered the call to serve his country, first joining the Nation Guard, and later serving in the United States Air Force from 1956 to 1960. He was working as a foreman at Globe Valve when he met his future wife Janis Richter Hanaway. The two were married at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Camden on June 9,1968 and built a life filled with love, laughter, and adventure.
After many years working at Wilson Foods in Logansport, Tuffy retired but remained active, working part-time at the Delphi Hardware Store. He enjoyed life’s simple pleasures. He was an avid golfer, and loved riding his motorcycle. He also loved traveling with Janis and together they visited every state in the country but one, creating countless memories along the way.
Tuffy was known for his warm spirit and generous heart. He never met a stranger and was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in need.
Surviving with his wife are several nieces and nephews , who will remember him with love and cherish the times they shared.
Tuffy was preceded in death by his parents, infant son, and his siblings Hobart, Mary, Beverly, Pete, Anne, Billy and Evelyn.
Visitation will be held from 1 to the time of service at 3pm on Wednesday April 8,2026 at Cree Funeral Home, Camden with Reverand Candice Hinkle officiating. Interment with military rites will follow at Camden Cemetery.
