In Memory

Bill Maxwell - Class Of 1955

Bill Maxwell

William Lee Maxwell passed away in Delphi on September 25, 2021, at the age of 84 ½.

Bill was born March 25, 1937, to John Philip and Anna Josephine Fisher Maxwell in Lafayette, IN.

He graduated from New Hope School and then from Delphi High School in 1955.  He was married to Judith Kay Crone on December 1, 1955, at the Ockley EUB Church.

Bill farmed and worked at TRW Ross Gear in Lafayette for over 30 years.  Bill and Judy were the parents of four children—Charles Maxwell, Cynthia Dill, David Maxwell, and Debra Allbaugh.  They were blessed with 12 grandchildren—Becky, Cassie, Matt, Erica, Lauren, Liz, Kate, Evan, Allie, Sally, Jenny, and Valerie--and 21 great-grandchildren.

Bill served in the National Guard.  He was elected to serve as Madison Township Trustee and on the Advisory Board.  He was on the Delphi Community School Corp. Board of Trustees, serving as president for a time during a large construction project, after which he was honored with the Making a Difference Award in 2001.

He was an active member of the Delphi Lions Club since 1975 and was proud to be part of three generations of members.  Bill was honored with the Melvin Jones Fellowship, the highest award from the Lions Club.  He served as a Boy Scout Leader and 4-H Club Leader and was on the Zion Citizen’s Cemetery Board.

He was a natural leader and generous volunteer.  One of his much-appreciated projects was repair and construction of many picnic tables for the two county parks and for Adams Mill.

Bill enjoyed fishing, trapping, playing cards, and running the combine.  And, to quote a grandchild, “Grandpa was a hard worker and always willing to lend a helping hand or offer advice. He will always be remembered by the grandkids and great-grandkids as the M&M Grandpa” (because of the ever-present M&M Man dispenser).

Bill was preceded in death by his parents and his children Chuck and Cindy as well as his brother Joe.  He is survived by his wife, Judy, and children David (Susan) Maxwell and Debbie (Tom) Allbaugh as well as Tom Dill and Lisa Maxwell, all the grandchildren and their families, and his sister, Bonnie.

There will be a private graveside service at a later date.  Memorial contributions to the Delphi Lions Club would be greatly appreciated.
