Services for Robert L. Smith, 64, 4092 West 500 South, Bringhurst, were held Saturday at Baker Funeral Home, Flora. Pastor Charles Compton officiated. Burial was in Zion Cemetery, Bringhurst. He died at 12:22 p.m. Jan. 1, 2002, at St. Elizabeth Hospital Medical Center, Lafayette. Born Dec. 4, 1937, in Madison Township, Carroll County, he was the son of Oakley and Mable Meeks Smith. He was married on June 18, 1958, in Lebanon, to Marlene Owens, who survives. A retired farmer, Mr. Smith was retired from full-time employment with the Carroll County Highway Department, where he continued to work part-time. He was a member of the Flora Presbyterian Church and was an avid fisherman and hunter. Also surviving are three sons. Robert Craig Smith of Mary Esther, Fla., Bret Alan Smith of Camden, and Samuel Todd Smith of Cutler; one daughter, Cathy Westfall of Bringhurst; three sisters, Mildred Rice, Donnabelle Eldridge and Bonnie Stephen, all of Lafayette; 14 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Three grandchildren preceded him in death. Memorials may be made to the Flora Presbyterian Church, Cancer Society, or Gideons.
