Matthew Walter Payne, 56, of Lafayette, passed away on Tuesday, September 15, 2026 at Franciscan East Hospital. He was born on May 26, 1970 in Indianapolis to the late Phillip and Judith (Warren) Payne.

After graduating high school, Matthew found employment at Subaru of Indiana Automotive (SIA), where he worked his way up to Team Leader and was employed for over 30 years. When he was not working, Matthew enjoyed playing poker, darts, and chess, and socializing with friends and family. He was also very proud of his truck, and liked listening to AC/DC and Tom Petty. Matthew loved taking care of others in need, and was kind, witty, and generous friend to all that knew him.

Matthew is survived by his children, Ryan Payne, Amanda (Tom) Walker, and Eric Payne; brothers, Chuck (Jasmine) Kerkhove, and Mark Payne; and grandchildren, Roman and Adam.

In addition to his parents, Matthew was preceded in death by a sister, Veronica Chapman.
