Kay Hensley - Class Of 1966

Kay Hensley 16 dies of injuries.  The entire community was shocked and saddened Sunday morning to learn of the death of Sharyl Kay Hensley, 16, a junior in the Delphi High School, who suffered head injuries in a two car crash on the curve near Treida Corner, west of Delphi, Friday night.  She had been in the intensive care ward at St. Elizabeth Hospital since the accident.  Her sister, Jo, 14, a freshmen in the Delphi School also was severely injured in the accident with head injuries and remains in St. Elizabeth Hospital in the intensive care ward in a critical condition.  Roberta Popejoy, 16, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Popejoy of Delphi, also a passenger in the car, had head injuries which required sixteen stitches.  She was released from St. Elizabeth Hospital Saturday morning.
Other passengers in the car, all uninjured, were Dianne Benker, drive of the car, a senior and daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Howard Benker of rural route 2, Brookston, Susan Maxwell, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Maxwell, rural route 1, Delphi and Marilyn Scott, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Scott, rural route 2, Brookston.
The accident occurred when the girls were homeward bound from the football game to change from band uniform to dance costume.  The rain-slick curve caused the Benker auto to skid into the path of one driven by Richard Sanders of route 12, Lafayette.  The Sanders auto hit the rear of the Benker car, springing the left rear door and throwing the two Hensley girls and the Popejoy girl, all riding in the back seat, onto the pavement.
The Hensley girls were taken to St. Elizabeth hospital in the Cornell ambulance and the Popejoy girl in the Cornell Station wagon.
The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James E. Hensley, Delphi rural route one, Kay was born in Noblesville July 30, 1948.  She was a member of the Yeoman Methodist Church and was a member of the "Top Twenty" choral group in the Delphi High School.  She also was a member of the Future Teachers' Club of America and the Girls Service Club.
Surviving with the father, mother and sister Jo are two other sisters, Sharon and Kimberly.  Funeral services were held from the Jackson Funeral Home Tuesday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. with the Rev. William Moon officiating.  Burial was in the Odd Fellows Cemetery.

I was very upset this summer when I went out to check Kay's grave site, only to find out when the Odd Fellows decided to cut down all of the trees, they also removed the shrub which was planted on Kay's grave by the Class of 1966....This was very upsetting and I think Odd Fellows should replace it, I took a picture of the site, and they even damaged the stone taking the shrub out.....I think the Class of 1966 should start a writing campaign or something to make them replace it......It looks so bare out there now.......Very Upset...

I went to school with Kay at Pittsburg and Delphi.  She was a kind and sweet girl.  God's Blessings!
