Betty Joanne Hughes (Shockley)

Betty Joann Hughes Shockley, 76, of 3782 Winston Drive, Lafayette, died at 8:10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 4, 2010, at her residence. She had battled pancreatic cancer since Dec. 18, 2009.

Born Jan. 24, 1933, in Delphi, she was the daughter of the late William E. and Hester Welker Hughes. She was a 1951 graduate of Delphi High School.

On July 17, 1964, she married Carl E. Shockley in Delphi, and he preceded her in death on Nov. 1, 2006.

Mrs. Shockley cooked for several years at the Sandwich Shop in Delphi, and was a homemaker. She and her husband had a foster home for 25 years, and had contact with more than 75 young people. She lived most of her life in the Delphi area. She moved to Arizona for a few years, then back to the Mulberry area, then to Lafayette.

She was a member of the Delphi United Methodist Church. She enjoyed reading, crocheting, camping and playing bingo.

Surviving are her children: twins Sherry Kindle of Lafayette and Jerry Shockley (wife: Tracy) of West Middleton, daughter Jennifer Wilson (husband: Ronald) of Indianapolis, and son James Shockley of Clarksville; a foster son, Bruce Hartman of Campbellsville, Ky.; and a sister, Millie Hahn of Lafayette.

Also surviving are 9 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by 2 daughters, Marsha and Kathy; and 3 brothers.
