Donald Chapman - Class Of 1930

  Lt. Col. Donald L. Chapman, 57, of 303 Park Lane, West Lafayette, an Army ROTC Instructor at Purdue at one time and retired commander of the Army Reserve Training Center in Lafayette, died at 3 a.m. Tuesday in St. Elizabeth Hospital.  He became ill Nov. 14 and was last admitted to the hospital Jan. 1.
  Born in Chenoa, Illinois, he was the son of Renn and Stella Robinson Chapman.  He moved to Delphi in 1916 and was the great-great-grandson of Henry Robinson, the first settler of Carroll County.  He was graduated from Delphi High School in 1930 and Purdue University.  His marriage in 1939 at Delphi was to Chetina DeLong.
  At Purdue, he was a member of Delta Tau Delta social fraternity, Eta Kappa Nue, honorary engineering fraternity, and the Sqabbard and Blade.
  Following graduation, he was employed by Duncan Electric and later was purchasing agent for Central Soya Co., Decatur, Ind.
  Col. Chapman was called to active duty with the Army in 1941 and served in the Pacific, Europe, and Korea.  In 1950, he was assigned to the U.S. Embassy in Paris, France, where he helped set up the first military assistance program in France.
  He taught Army ROTC at Purdue and was later commander of the Army Reserve Training Center there during which time the Reserve Armory on South Street was built.  He retired in 1961, and since 1963, had been employed by the Purdue Alumni Association.  He was a member of the Delphi Methodist Church.
  Surviving with the widow are a son, Donald of Jackson, Mississippi; three brothers, Wilbur Arland and Eldren, all of Monticello and a sister, Mrs. Claude Butt of Monticello, and a granddaughter, Amanda Bidgley.
  Funeral services will be Thursday at 1:30 p.m. in Hippensteel Chapel at Lafayette and interment will be in the Masonic Cemetery at Delphi with full military graveside rites by Lafayette American Legion.
