Dortha Shaffer - Class Of 1930

Dorthea M. Shaffer, 78, of Delphi, died at 11:20 a.m. Aug. 24, 1990, at St. Elizabeth Healthcare Center, where she had resided sinced Aug. 3. She had been seriously ill for three months. Born July 19, 1912, in Delphi, she was the daughter of Larry Ray and Ethel Griffith Shaffer. She resided in Delphi all her life. She was a 1930 graduate of Delphi High School and attended Indiana University at Bloomington. She had served as secretary of the Delphi Chamber of Commerce since 1937, and in 1985 received the Samuel Milroy Award from the Chamber. In 1951 she became the first woman elected to the Delphi City Council. She served on the council until 1955. She worked two years at the Delphi License Branch, and then from 1934 to June of 1979 she worked at the former Mount & Son Hardware Store in Delphi. She was store manager for 16 years. For the past 11 years, she was bookkeeper and secretary at Wallmann’s Foods in Delphi. She was a member, past Worthy Matron, and past secretary of the Rose Chapter of OES, which is now a part of the Carroll Chapter, OES, 475. She was a former Mother Advisor of the Delphi Rainbow Assembly, and was a former Grand Mother Advisor. She formerly was a member of the Delphi United Methodist Church for over 60 years. Surviving are two sisters, Mary Helen Shaffer, with whom she made her home, and Ruth Smith of Monticello; and two brothers, Howard G. Shaffer of Rt. 2, Monticello, and William E. Shaffer of New Castle. Services were Monday at Horn Funeral Home with Dr. Ellwood K. Smith officiating. Burial was in Masonic Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Carroll County Cancer Association.
