Dick Clifford

James R. (Dick) Clifford, 48, of 610 E. Monroe St., Delphi, died at 8:15 a.m. Tuesday in St. Elizabeth Hospital.  He had been in failing health for sometime and had just returned home from Mayo Clinic.
  Mr. Clifford was a manufacturer's representative for Sayco Plumbing Supplies.  He formerly was associated with the Clifford Clothing Store in Delphi.
  Born Feb. 5, 1923, in Lafayette, he was the son of James A. and Helen McKay Clifford, and had spent his lifetime in the Delphi Community.  His marriage Feb. 16, 1957, at St. Joseph Catholic Church was to Martha Kerlin.
  He was a veteran of World War II and the Korean Conflict.  He entered the Army in Dec. 1942 and was discharged as Staff Sergeant in Dec. 1945.  Clifford served in the first shuttle raid to Russia at the time and participated in all missions from Russia into Germany with his group.  He participated in 50 combat missions, many suffering 80 to 90% loss.  After completing 50 missions in Europe, he volunteered for service in the Pacific and helped in the liberation of the Philippines.,  His decorations and citations include four bronze stars, four oak leaf clusters and the distinguished Unit.
  Mr. Clifford was a member of the Delphi American Legion Post 75, Lafayette Elks, Delphi Knights of Columbus and Indiana and Kentucky Plumbing Association.
  Surviving with the widow are his father who lives in Delphi; two sons and a daughter, Drew, Hugh and Suzanne, all at home; two brothers and five sisters, Maurice Clifford of Delphi; John Clifford of Milwaukee, Wis.; Marjorie Clifford, Monon; Dorothy Lidester of Lafayette, Joan Clifford of Los Angeles, Calif.; Mary Christie of Indianapolis; and Helen Bernard of Sacramento, Calif.
  His mother preceded him in death in Sept., 1970.
  Requiem mass will be at 11 a.m. Friday in the St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Delphi, where he was a member.  Concelebrants will be the Rev. W. Michael Kettron and the Rev. David D. Clifford.  Interment with military services will be in the church cemetery.
  Friends may call after 4 p.m. today, Thursday at the Lloyd Funeral Home.
