Wayne Draper

Wayne Lee Draper, 78, of rural Brookston, went home to be with the Lord, on Tues-May 14, 2013, at 10:33pm. He became ill at home, and died at St. Elizabeth Central Hospital ER-Lafayette. He was born Nov 25, 1934 in Carroll County, to the late Donald & Myrtle Mae Sibray Draper. His marriage was to Linda Sue Lee in Delphi, on July 31, 1959, and she survives. He was a 1953 graduate of Delphi High School. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran, serving aboard the USS Telfair, as a quarter master/navigator. The movie "Francis in the Navy" was partly filmed on his ship, and he was the personal escort for the female lead, Martha Hyer. He crossed the equator twice, served in Japan, China, Turkey, and Canada. He worked for 39 ½ years for Rae Magnet Wire, Lafayette, as the receiving clerk, retiring in 1996. For 35 years he attended the Badger Grove Baptist Church, where he was past president of the New Badger Builders Sunday school class. The last 5 years he and his wife have attended the Chalmers Community Church, where served as an usher, and attended the Keen Agers Bible study. He was an avid vegetable gardener, loved to mushroom hunt, and hunt pheasants. He enjoyed playing golf, and bowled for over 20 years on the Lafayette Industrial League, and the retirees "Oldies but Goodies Team", where he was past president. He took part in the Senior Games for 13 years, winning many metals in horseshoe's, and bowling. He is a past member of the Greater Lafayette Horseshoe League, again winning many 1st place trophies. Surviving: wife Linda S. Draper of Brookston; daughter Holly & Ron Burke Jr of Rockwall, TX; sons Michael & Janice Draper of Brookston; Andrew Draper companion Amy Judy of Delphi; grandchildren: Austin Draper of Brookston, Abbie & Colin Dorton of Lafayette, Will Draper of Flora, Mikayle & Mackenzie Burke of Rockwall, TX, Katelyn Draper of Delphi; great grandson: Zachary Draper of Brookston. Two sisters: Jean Ann & Don Sommers of Idaville, Judy & Bill Mullin of Linn; Three brothers: Billy & Pat Draper, Bob & Marge Draper, Fred & Linda Draper all of Delphi. He is also survived by his constant canine companion Daisy. Preceded in death by a son Joseph Jennings Draper; brother Don Draper Jr; sisters Donna Simmons, & Betty Jo Spitznagle. Services: Friends may call Friday 4-8pm at Abbott Funeral Home-Delphi, funeral Saturday 10:30am there, burial at Mount Zion Citizens Cemetery, rural Carroll County. Military Rites by Delphi & Camden American Legions, and the Delphi VFW. Memorial contributions to the American Heart and Lung Association s, envelopes available at the funeral home.
