Gilbert Underhill

 Funeral services were Saturday, at the Delphi United Methodist Church for Gilbert O. Underhill, 68, Delphi, who was dead on arrival at St. Elizabeth Hospital Wednesday, July 14, 1982, at 7:08 p.m.  Death was unexpected.
  Born Oct. 23, 1913, in Colburn, his parents were Nelson and Viola Grantham Underhill.  He married Lela Irene Beale in Delphi in 1934.  She survives.
  A 1933 graduate of Delphi High School, he was a former chief of police in Delphi, deputy sheriff of Carroll County and had been employed by the Police League of Indiana.  He was a former officer and member of the board of directors at Underhill Industries in Delphi and had been a consultant with the firm for the last five years.  He retired from Fairfield Manufacturing in 1975 after 15 years and had been employed in security at Alcoa in Lafayette.  At one time he was in the appliance and furniture business in Delphi.  He served on the Delphi City Council in 1960.
  His memberships include the Delphi United Methodist Church and Masonic Lodge in Delphi.  He was Red Cross disaster chairman for 25 years in Carroll County.  Mr. Underhill was first governor of the Moose Lodge in Delphi and a former member of I.O.O.F. Lodge in Delphi.  Active in the Democratic party, he had served formerly as county treasurer of the party.  He was a former member of Indiana Association of Chief of Police and Indiana State Juvenile Officers Association.
  Surviving are one son, Gerry Lee, of Delphi and two daughters, Mrs. Gerald (Carol Sue) Ward of Juno Isles, Fla., and Mrs. Dave (Sara Jane) Smith, Delphi; two brothers, Harold Underhill of Colburn and Kenneth Underhill of Logansport, one sister, Dorotha Trieda, Lafayette, and eight grandchildren.  One grandchild preceded him in death.
  Thompson Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements with Rev. James Rankin and Rev. Donald Ashley officiating for the services.  Burial was in Masonic Cemetery.  Memorials may be given to the American Heart Fund.
