Arthur M. McDowell
DELPHI — Arthur M. McDowell, 68, Indianapolis,
a former Delphi resident, died Sunday in St. Elizabeth Hospital, Lafayette.
He was born Nov. 27, 1916, in Delphi, to
William D. and Lula Mellinger McDowell.
He was a 1935 graduate of Delphi High School.
He had been editor of the former Delphi
Citizen from 1944 to 1964, and was a Carroll
County correspondent for WSAL, Logansport.
He was public relations director of the
Indiana American Legion for 21 years,
retiring in January. He had also served as historian and editor of the Hoosier
Legionnaire. He coordinated the Legion's
Ernie Pyle home restoration fund, as well
as community involvement programs
and the law and order program, "Fallen Heroes." He was the editor of the Forty et Eighter,
and had served on the Governor's
Advisory Commission for the Indiana Veterans Home, Lafayette.
He was a longtime member of the Legion's
National Public Relations Commission, and
was a past Second District commander
and past national executive committeeman. Following his retirement, he was named an honorary police chief in Indianapolis.
He was a past post commander and life member
of the Delphi American Legion and was
organizer and first chairman of the
Carroll County United Fund. He was a member
of the Greater Indianapolis Information Association, the Indianapolis Press Club,
and the First Presbyterian Church, Delphi.
Surviving are three sisters, Josephine M.
Brown, Kate McDowell and Helen Vaughan, all of Delphi;
and a brother, John C., Fowler.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday
in Horn Funeral Home, Delphi, with the Rev.
Ellis Gasser officiating. Burial, with
military rites, will be in Morning Heights Cemetery, Delphi.
Friends may call from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9
p.m. Tuesday in the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the First Pre-
sbyterian Church.
