William E. Shaffer

William "Bill" Shaffer, 92, of New Castle, died Sat., Apr. 26,2008 in Glen Oak Health Campus following a brief illness. Bill was born Oct. 23,1915 in Delphi, IN, a son of the late Larry R. and Ethel L. (Griffith) Shaffer. He worked on the family farm until entering WW II where he served as a Staff Sergeant in the United States Army during two overseas tours of duty in the Rhineland and Central Europe Campaigns. Upon his discharge from the army in 1947, he acquired the rank of First Lt. He worked for many years for the Excise State Police as an officer retiring in 1965. He was a member of the Hagerstown American Legion Post #333, The Forty& Eight, and was a life-long member of the United Methodist Church. For the past 40 years, he was the always visible and hard working caretaker of Payne Village Shopping Center. His presence there will be missed immensely. He is survived by his wife, Betty (Payne) Shaffer; his son, Kevin (wife: Jacqueline) Shaffer of Indianapolis; two sisters, Mary Shaffer of Delphi and Ruth Smith of Monticello; and two nephews, Mike and Steve Smith both of Monticello. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a sister, Dorthea Shaffer and a brother, Howard Shaffer. A Memorial Service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Apr. 29, 2008 at Sproles Family Funeral Home with a time gathering for family and friends one hour prior of the service.
