Harold Matthews - Class Of 1937

 Harold H. Matthews, 80, of Delphi, died at 7:15 p.m. July 13, 2000 at his residence.

     Born Dec. 31, 1919, in Rogard, Mo., he was the son of Marion and Maud Farmer Matthews.  His marriage was on Sept. 7, 1940, in Delphi, to Meredith Jean Loy.  She preceded him in death on Nov. 1, 1997.

     He attended Delphi High School and was a graduate of the TV Technical School.

     Mr. Matthews was a Navy veteran of World War II.

     He retired after 42 1/2 years as a millwright at Alcoa.  He also owned and operated the Matthews TV and Appliance Repair in Delphi from 1955 to 1967.

     He was a 43-year member of the Delphi United Methodist Church, a 50-year member of the Delphi American Legion, and an original member of the Wabash & Erie Canal Association, serving as a director.

     Mr. Matthews was an avid Purdue basketball fan and also enjoyed fishing, hunting, and Delphi Little League baseball.

     Surviving are two sons, Robert Dean Matthews of Delphi and Richard Douglas Matthews of Lafayette; a daughter, Janice Matthews Burkhart of Delphi; a sister, Martha Knitter of Delphi; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by a brother.

     Services were Sunday at Davidson Funeral Home with Rev. Mark Ellcessor officiating.  Burial was in Zion Cemetery, with military rites by the Delphi American Legion.

     Memorials may be made to the Boy Scouts of America, Delphi American Legion, Delphi United Methodist Church, and Carroll County Cancer Association.
