John T Smith - Class Of 1939

John T. Smith, 71, of Delphi, died unexpectedly at 6:48 p.m. July 19, 1992, in the emergency room at St. Elizabeth Hospital.
  Born Feb. 27, 1921, in Medaryville, he was the son of Charles and Lillian Garling Smith.  His family moved to Delphi when he was six years old.
  He was a 1939 graduate of Delphi High School and a 1943 graduate of Indiana University.
  His marriage was on June 3, 1956, in Flora, to Catherine Thomson, who survives.
  He was president and manager of the Carroll County Abstract Company in Delphi, and worked there for over 39 years.  He was clerk-treasurer for the City of Delphi from 1949-1953, and was a Carroll County Councilman for 29 years, leaving that office in 1990.
  A World War II Army veteran, he was a cryptographic technician in China.
  He was a member of Mt. Olive Masonic Lodge 48 and served as lodge secretary for the past 37 years.  He also was a member and former adjutant of Delphi American Legion Post 75, and a member of Delphi United Methodist Church, Delphi Rotary Club, and the Wabash & Erie Canal Association.
  Also surviving are one sister, Ruth Erb of Fort Wayne.
  Services were today at Horn Funeral Home with Rev. Ellis Gasser officiating.  Burial was in Masonic Cemetery, Delphi, with military rites by the Delphi American Legion.
