Charles Smith - Class Of 1939

Charles Alex Smith, 64, of 103 Crest Drive, Delphi, died unexpectedly Friday, January 4, 1985 at 12:29 a.m. in the emergency room of St. Elizabeth Hospital of an apparent heart attack.
  He was born November 30, 1920 in Carroll County, the son of Ray E. and Opal G. Mears Smith.  His marriage was July 17, 1939, in Delphi Methodist Church to H. Jane Goslee and she survives.
  He was a 1939 graduate of Delphi High School and a WW II Navy veteran.  Mr. Smith was District Agent for Prudential Life Insurance Company in this area for 25 years.  He earned his Certified Life Underwriters designation in 1968.  Prior, he had been a district representative for Massey-Ferguson Farm Equipment in this area and before that, a machinery salesman for Farm Bureau Coop.  He was a member of Delphi United Methodist Church where he was a certified lay leader and Sunday School teacher, member and past president of the United Methodist Men, and active in many other capacities of the church.  Other memberships include Delphi American Legion, Post 75, 30 year member and past director of Delphi Lions Club, Delphi IOOF Lodge, Lafayette Life Underwriters, American College of Life Underwriters, life member of the Million Dollar Round Table, and Carroll County Country Club.
  Surviving with his wife are two daughters, Mrs. Dean (Caren) Burton, Rt. 4, Delphi, and Mrs. Douglas (Alexis) Glowe, Rochest, Michigan; one son, Charles S. "Steve" Smith, Battleground; one brother, Jack Ray Smith, Monticello; four sisters,Mrs. Glen (Zonabelle) May, Brookston, Mrs. Joseph (Kathryn) Dubes, Lafayette, Mrs. Gordon (Ruby) Martin, Lafayette, and Mrs. Gilbert (Hope) Hughes, Ettrick, Wisconsin; six grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
  One sister and two brothers preceded in death.
  Services were Sunday afternoon in Delphi United Methodist Church with Rev. Donald Ashley officiating.  Burial was in Masonic Cemetery with military rites.
  The family suggest memorial contribution be made to the Heart Fund.
