William Bowman Baird, son of Mrs. Verna Baird of Pittsburg, was the first county man reported killed in the war with Japan.  A member of the crew of the U.S.S. Arizona, Baird is presumed to have gone down with the warship in Pearl Harbor.
  The 32, 600-ton vessel was reported hit in one funnel and Baird, who was in the radio compartment, is believed to have been killed by the blast.  The telegram stated, that the Pittsburg youth was "missing in action".
  Baird  enlisted in the Navy shortly after his graduation from the Delphi high school in 1940.  An affable young man, he was one of the most popular students of the local high school.  He made his home for several years with his grandmother, Mrs. George Bowman of Pittsburg.  He has no brother or sisters.
  Byron Baird, father of William, served with Battery C. 137th Field Artillery, in the A.E.F. during the World War.
