Owen Schweiger - Class Of 1940

Pvt. Owen J. Schweiger, only son of Mr. and Mrs. Reid Schweiger, of Delphi, was killed in a train wreck in France on Aug. 18, according to a War Department message received by the parents. A graduate of Delphi high school in 1940, he was a member of the Yeoman Methodist church. He had been member of the Delphi National Guard unit since 1938 and left for Camp Shelby with other members of the unit in January, 1941. He was injured in maneuvers in Louisiana in 1942 and was placed on limited service, being assigned to guard duty as a member of the military police. Later he was assigned to a hospital unit, arriving in England in October, 1943. He was trained in field medicine and then sent to the continent. His wife, the late Eloise Ward Schweiger, daughter of Orville Ward, of Carroll county, was killed near Lafayette in a shotgun accident 18 months ago. The parents are the only survivors.
