Steve Downing - Class Of 1982

 Steve Downing died in the spring of 1980 (I think) on the track during PE class. Great kid, gentle soul.  Submitted by Gary Fuller '82

 

Steven E. Downing, 15, Burrows, was pronounced dead at 12:44 p.m. Monday, April 21, 1980, at St. Elizabeth Hospital, Lafayette, after collapsing at approximately 10:30 a.m. on the track at Delphi Community High School.
  An autopsy by Carroll County Coroner listed the cause of death as cardiac arrhythmia, which is an irregular heartbeat.
  According to Garald Manahan, D.C.H.S. principal, Downing as running the 600 yard run in physical education class when he collapsed, Cardio pulmonary resuscitation and mouth-to-mouth resuscitation were immediately administered and the ambulance was called.  Ambulance attendants worked to revive the boy, St. Elizabeth Hospital emergency attendants also were unable to revive him before he was pronounced dead at 12:44 p.m.
  Downing was born Sept. 20, 1964, son of Kenneth and Diane Trinosky Downing.  He was a sophomore at D.C.H.S., a member of the high school band and a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Logansport.
  He is survived by his parents and one brother, Kenneth, Jr., a student at Purdue University in Lafayette; the maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Edward Trinosky of Winamac and the paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Downing of Star City.
  Friends may call today at Kroeger Funeral Home in Logansport after 10 a.m. where Rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m.  Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Vincent de Paul Church with the Rev. Father Maurice Miller officiating.  Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery at Logansport.

Cheryl-Lynn T Vaughan (Neal) (1980)

I remembered when that happened in High School. He was the best friend of my high school boyfriend. Sadly missed by all.

Christina Justice (McPherson) (1982)

I was in gym class and at the track when it happened.  Steve was a very quiet and gentle person.  He was always nice to everyone.  It was a really tough day for all of us and he was missed by us all.
