Roy Sheets

State Police Capt. Roy T. Sheets, 50, Francesville, died Tuesday, Dec. 9, 1980 in Pulaski Memorial Hospital of an apparent heart attack. Born in Ockley on Sept. 22, 1930, he was the son of Charles and Mary Gilliam Sheets. On Oct. 2, 1955, he was married to Joyce D. Norris, who survives. A captain and administrative supervisor of the Lowell State Police Post, he served in the Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict. He was a member of the Knox VFW, the Delphi American Legion, Masonic Lodge No. 438, the Scottish Rite of South Bend, the Pioneer Club of the State Police, the University of Louisville Alumni Association and the North Judson All-Sport Booster Club. In 1979, Sheets was selected by the Forty et Eight, national honor group of The American Legion, as the nation’s Outstanding Law Officer. He was awarded the honor when the 40 et 8 met in national convention in Houston, Texas. Basis for the award was his outstanding record as a peace officer and for his activities with youth. Surviving with his wife are two sons, David Sheets and Charles Sheets, both of San Pierre; three sisters, Helen Shaffer, Lafayette; Eva McLaughlin, Monticello; and Dena Sigman, Montmorenci; and four brothers, Argust Sheets, Ockley, Don Sheets, Lafayette; and Raymond Sheets and Bob Sheets, both of Flora. Services were held Friday in the McCormick-O’Donnell Funeral Home with the Rev. Clyde K. Hunter officiating. Burial was held in the San Pierre Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Starke County Chapter of the American Heart Association.
