James Riley - Class Of 1927

Deceased October16, 1978

Letter from 50th Class Reunion

After graduation from DHS, I took short courses at Purdue.  I was a licensed inspector of grapes in New York State and of tomatoes in Indiana.  I worked as a fieldman for tomates for College Inn Food Products of Chicago, Illinois in 1937 & 1938 and lived in Cass County, Indiana.

In 1933, I was married to Mary Fisher, class of '29, DHS, and with the exception of those two years we have lived in Carroll County where I have been engaged in dairy farming.  We bred Holstein cattle under the prefix, Riland Farms.  I am a member of the Masonic Lodge, Tipwa Grange, and the Farm Bureau.  I have helped with community service on school boards, been an officer of Farm Bureau, Grange and Holstein cattle organizations.

I like to fish, trapshoot and look after farm interests now.  We have one son, who lives in Carroll County and operates Riland Farms Sales and Service business.  He also farms and fees cattle.  We also have one daughter who lives in Kouts, Indiana.  She works in business and is also a school teacher.

We have three grandchildren: Todd, Janell and Tedd.  They all attend the Delphi Community Schools.  We do enjoy our children and grandchildren very much.

Services for James W. Riley, Sr. 69, Rt. 2, Brookston, were Saturday at Thompson Funeral Home, Delphi.  Burial was in the Masonic Cemetery.
He died at 2:20 a.m. Thursday, October 26, 1978, at St. Elizabeth Hospital, Lafayette, where he had been a patient 10 days.  He had been in ill health one and a half years.
Born Dec. 9, 1906, in Carroll County, he was the son of William Frank and Blanche Riffey Riley.  He was married April 8, 1933, in Carroll County to Mary L. Fisher, who survives.
A retired grain and dairy famer Riley was a 1927 graduate of Delphi High School.  He was formerly a federal fruit and vegetable inspector and a former member of the Holstein-Friesian Association.  He was a member of the Mount Olive Masonic Lodge No. 48, the Carroll County Farm Bureau, and Tip-Wa Grange.
Surviving with the wife are a son, James W. Riley, Jr. of Rt. 2, Brookston, a daughter, Marjorie C. Riley of Kouts, and five grandchildren.
Two infant children preceded him in death.
