Mark Smith - Class Of 1927

  Funeral services were Saturday afternoon at Lloyd Funeral Home in Delphi for Mark R. Smith, 66, and his wife, Jean J. Smith, 67, of Rt. 3, Box 33, Delphi.  The Rev. Donald Ashley officiated and burial was in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery at Delphi.
  They died instantly in a headon acciedent at 3:19 p.m. last Wednesday at the intersection of Ind. 25 and Ind. 225, southwest of Delphi.  They reportedly suffered broken necks and massive head injuries.
  The Smith couple was enroute north on Ind. 25, four and a half miles north of Lafayette.  Reportedly Smith swerved left to avoid hitting a van truck which had stopped in front of them to turn left onto 225.  The Smith car went into the southbound lane where it struck headon a car driven by Mrs. Maydeen C. Crosby, 51, of near Lafayette, who is listed as serious in St. Elizabeth Hospital with multiple fracture and lacerations.  The Crosby woman was pinned in her car for more than an hour and it took 40 minutes for a rescue crew to free her from the wreckage.
  Mr. Smith was born July 28, 1909, in Remon, Ill., the son of James and Leona Kemper Smith.  He was a World War II Air Force veteran and retired in 1972 from RCA at Monticello.
  Mrs. Smith was born March 9, 1908, in London, England.
  They are survived by a son, Jerry Smith of Bloomington, and a granddaughter.  He also is survived by a sister, Mrs. Emery (Minnie) Martin of Delphi.  She is survived by three brothers and a sister, Sid and Max Hyatt and Sadie Green of London, England, and Lynn Hyatt of California.
