Roger Mayhill

Dr. Q. Roger Mayhill, 81, of 4819 State Road 43 North, West Lafayette, departed this life early on the morning of Saturday. November 4,1989, at his residence as the result of an apparent heart attack. Born April 10, 1908, in Flora, Indiana, he was the son of former State Representative Bert Mayhill and Dora Thomas, who were also very prominent in the ownership and operation of Carroll County newspapers, including the Delphi Journal in Delphi and the Hoosier Democrat in Flora. The Mayhill family moved to Delphi in 1910, and Dr. Mayhill was a 1925 graduate of Delphi High School. While living in Delphi as a young man. Dr. Mayhill was very active with the Youth Christian movement, and had what was possibly the largest class which was ever held at the First Presbyterian Church in Delphi. He served as the Editor of the Delphi Journal, and was at one time owner of that newspaper, until it was sold by the family in August of 1941. Dr. Mayhill also owned a newspaper in Coldwater, Michigan, in 1934. A 1932 graduate of Purdue University. Dr. Mayhill received his doctorate degree in History in 1942 at the University of Illinois, and a Masters Degree in Business Administration from New York University. Never married. Dr. Mayhill had dedicated his life to the profession of teaching beginning his career at Purdue University in 1935; as well as to his country and to the betterment of mankind. In 1936, Dr. Mayhill taught History at the University of Illinois, returning to Purdue University in 1937. In 1948, Dr. Mayhill went to New York University, where he received his Masters Degree in Business Administration in 1952. Returning to Purdue University in that year, he continued teaching Business Administration of Air Transportation. History and Economics until his retirement from Purdue University in 1974. A World War II Veteran of the U.S, Navy, he served as a Lieutenant Sr. Grade in the Layte Gulf of the Philippines, Panama, New Guinea, and Egypt from 1942-1946. As a Navy Ensign, Roger Mayhill gained national attention when serving in the Layte Gulf when his gunners crew shot down two kamikaze piloted planes which were attacking the U.S. convoy. A retired professor Emeritus at Purdue University, Dr. Mayhill was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Delphi. He was also a Director of Mayhill Publications, Inc., and a member of the Indiana Republican Editorial Association. Delphi American Legion Post 75, IOOF Lodge in Delphi, Wabash & Erie Canal Association, the Carroll County Historical Society, a life member of the Mt. Olive Masonic Lodge 48 in Delphi, and served several national historical groups. From 1932-1933, Dr. Mayhill served as President of the Indiana Young Peoples Christian Association. He was also very active up to the time of his passing with the Carroll County Republican party. Surviving are one brother. R. Thomas Mayhill of Knightstown, Indiana; three nieces, one nephew and twelve great nieces and nephews. Services for Dr. G. Roger Mayhill were held in Delphi on Tuesday, November 7, 1989, at Horn Funeral Home, the Rev. Ellis Gasser officiating. Burial with American Legion rites was in the Maple Lawn Cemetery, Flora.
