Tom McCain - Class Of 1926

Mr. Thomas C. McCain, 80, of Route 1, Delphi, a descendant of one of the early settler families in Carroll County, departed this life at 10:45 a.m. on Sunday. October 23, 1988, at St. Elizabeth Healthcare Center, Delphi, where he had been a resident six days. Born September 5, 1908, in Delphi, Indiana, he was the son of Luther R. McCain and Helen Harley. On December 31, 1935, he was married in Delphi to Roseland Amm, and she survives. Mr. McCain joined his father in the Jewelry business while he was a boy, and owned and operated the L.R. McCain & Son Jewelers in Delphi from 1934 until 1961. At the same time he also owned and operated Land Mobile Radio Service in Delphi. For many years, Mr. McCain was the caretaker and repairman for all the clocks on the inside and the exterior of the Carroll County Courthouse in Delphi. From 1961 until his retirement in 1974, Mr. McCain worked as an Instrument Technician at Purdue University in the School of Chemistry. A 1926 graduate of Delphi High School, and graduate of Bradley University, Peoria, Illinois, in the School of Horology, Mr. McCain served with the National Guard. Mr. McCain was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Delphi; the Wabash & Erie Canal Association of which he is a Charter Member; the Oracle Club; Mt. Olive Masonic Lodge, Delphi; IOOF Lodge, Delphi; the Carroll County Historical Society; and a Life Member of the American Radio Relay League, with which he was very active as a ham radio operator, talking with people all over the world. Surviving with his wife, Roseland, are three sons Dr. Douglas C. McCain of Hattiesburg, Mississippi, T. Daniel McCain of Delphi, and David R. McCain of Fairfax, California; one brother, Robert H. McCain of Monticello; one granddaughter, Nicole D. McCain; and 2 step-grand- daughters. He was preceded in passing by one sister. Services for Mr. Thomas C. McCain will be held this morning. Wednesday, October 26, 1988, at 11:00 a.m. in the Horn Funeral Home, Delphi, the Rev. Ellis Gasser officiating. Burial will be in the IOOF Cemetery.
