Mary Jane Stokes, 99, of Delphi and formerly of Brookston, died at 7:30 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 2, 2008, at St. Elizabeth Nursing Facility in Delphi. She had been a resident there for the past six years.She was born Aug. 29, 1909, in Carroll County, to the late Elmer and Della E. Pugh Irelan. She was a 1928 graduate of Adams Township High School.She married Elmer Stokes on March 11, 1932, in Delphi. He died June 12, 1964. Mrs. Stokes was a homemaker and also provided home health assistance for many individuals. She enjoyed reading the Bible.Surviving is a sister, Anna Bilyeu of Monticello. Also surviving are two daughters-in-law, Beverly Stokes of Valparaiso and Carolyn Stokes of Brookston; 5 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. Preceding her in death were 2 sons, Raymond and Fred Stokes; 4 brothers; and 4 sisters.Friends may call from 11 a.m. until the time of service at 12 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 5, 2008, in Brookston Church of Christ. Interment to follow in Hickory Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society. Hartzler-Clapper Funeral Home of Brookston is handling the arrangements.
