John Hamling - Class Of 1921

  John H. Hamling, 54, of Delphi, a prominent Delphi attorney and businessman, died at the family home Saturday afternoon after an illness of more than a year.
  Active in Democrat politics, he served two terms as prosecuting attorney of Carroll County and in 1956 sought the Democratic nomination for Congressman from the Second District.  During World War II, he served with the FBI, and following the death of his father, Mr. Hamling returned here to manage the family tavern business.
  Born in Delphi June 8, 1903, he was the son of the late John W. and Margaret (Swegman) Hamling.  A graduate of Delphi High School and St. Joseph's Parochial school, he received his law degree from the University of Notre Dame, in 1925.  He was a member of the Elks Lodge and St. Joseph church.
  Surviving with the widow, the former Thelma Thompson Morrison, are three daughters by a previous marriage: Jean Strantz of Fowler, Joan McClurg of Indianapolis, and Judith Cross of Pendleton; a stepdaughter, Beverlee Shaffer of route 1, Flora.
  Funeral rites were conducted at 10 a.m. Tuesday from St. Joseph's church with Rev. Father Clarence Murphy officiating.  Burial was in St. Joseph cemetery.  Eikenberry funeral home was in charge of arrangements.  Pallbearers were his sons-in-law; John Smock, a former law partner; Jay Wingard and Harry Shaffer, Jr.
