Josephine McDowell (Brown) - Class Of 1921

Josephine  McDowell Brown, 88, of Delphi, died at 12:45 p.m. Jan. 3, 1992, at Home Hospital where she had been a patient for 10 days.
  She had resided at Birchwood Manor in Delphi for the past year.
  Born Sept. 17, 1903, in Delphi, she was the daughter of William and Lula Mellinger McDowell.  Her marriage was on Aug. 23, 1939, in Bloomington to Dr. Vernie H. Brown, who died Jan. 5, 1958.
  She was a 1921 graduate of Delphi High School.
  She was the court reporter for the Carroll Circuit Court from January 1930 until retiring on Sept. 30, 1977.  She served under Judges Edward Pruitt, William Smith, Watson McCormick, John R. Smock, and Donald Myers.  Before that, she worked in the Carroll County Abstract Office, and for many years was the emergency relief contact for the Carroll County Chapter of the American Red Cross.
  She was a member of the Delphi First Presbyterian Church, a charter member of Psi Iota Xi Sorority; a charter member of American Legion Auxiliary, and a life member of the Elks Auxiliary in Lafayette.
  Surviving are one sister, Helen Vaughan of Delphi; and a brother, John C. McDowell of Fowler.  She was preceded in death by one sister and one brother.
  Services were Monday at Horn Funeral Home with Rev. Ellis Gasser officiating.  Burial was in Morning Heights Cemetery, Rt. 3, Delphi.
  Memorials can be made to the First Presbyterian Church, Diabetes Association, or donor's favorite charity.
