George Smock

George Smock, 78, 7215 Wabash Ave., Terre Haute, died unexpectedly of an apparent heart attack Sat., May 1, 1982, minutes after he and his wife arrived home from an extended trip to California.
  Born in Delphi, he was the son of James and Mattie Hatfield Smock.  His marriage in 1935 at Scranton, Pa., was to Charlotte Gelder.  He was graduated from Delphi High School in 1923.  He received his A.B. degree in 1927 from DePauw University; M.A. degree from University of Chicago in 1928 and his Ph.D. degree from Cornell University in 1934.  He was a member of Beta Theta Pi fraternity at DePauw and the United Methodist Church.
  He was instructor of English and Speech at Illinois College and Purdue University.  He taught at DePauw and Cascadilla Preparatory School in Ithaca, N.Y.  He also was professor of English and chairman of department at South Dakota State University and Indiana State University, 1946-1971, from which he retired in 1971.  He also had traveled extensively.
  Dr. Smock is survived by his wife; one daughter, Mrs. Donald (Catherine) McFall of Fullerton, Calif.; and three sons, James, George Jr., and William Smock, all of Terre Haute.  He was preceded in death by a brother, William Smock, and a sister, Eva Smock Braden.
  Services were Monday at Terre Haute with one of his sons officiating.  Burial was at Terre Haute.
