Leonard Blythe - Class Of 1924

Leonard James Blythe, 49, highly respected Delphi businessman, died suddenly Tuesday afternoon at his place of business, victim of a heart block. Although in poor health for some time, he had been at the store Tuesday, had been attending to routine business and when stricken about 3 p. m. was sitting talking with a friend. He died a few minutes later. Funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock friday afternoon at the Elkenberry funeral home with the Rev. Harry Parker and the Rev. James Rankin officiating. Burial will be made In the Masonic cemetery. Born in St. Louis, Nov. 5, 1905, he was a graduate of Delphi high school with the class of 1924. He attended New York University and later was associated with his father, Harry Blythe, in business on Long Island. N. Y. In 1935: he returned to Delphi to assist his. aunt, Miss Lillian Blythe in the management of the furniture and funeral home business, which the family operated. Later the funeral business was sold and he became, In 1943, the owner of the Blythe Furniture store, which his father had founded in 1857. He was married May 31,1939, with Luella Crowder, who survives. Other survivors include Mrs. Harry Blythe of Brooklyn; and two sons, James Harry and William Lee, both at home. One brother, William, died in 1938. His father died in 1953. As a child he was stricken with polio and was left handicapped despite every assistance. However, he lived an active life, liking nothing more than to play even a strenuous game of baseball with his friends. Although during his life he had traveled back and forth considerably between Indiana and the east. Leonard Blythe was one who loved Delphi thoroughly and completely and enjoyed the quiet, tranquil way of life available here as opposed to the city ways which he might have had if he had preferred.
