Charles Bowen - Class Of 1918

Funeral services for Charles E. “Chilly” Bowen, 80, of 407 W. University Ave., C, Champaign, Ill., were Monday at Champaign. Burial was in Rose Lawn Cemetery there. The first executive director of the University of Illinois Alumni Association and long-time UI volunteer died Friday, November 21, 1980, at Carle Hospital in Champaign. Born February 3, 1900, at Delphi, he was the son of Edward and Della Gregg Bowen. His marriage on October 23, 1926, at Delphi, was to Ruth Wason, who survives. After graduation from the University of Illinois in 1922, he worked as manager of an oil company and later as an associate in the A. T. Bowen & Co. Bank in Delphi. In 1927 he returned to Champaign-Urbana to become ticket manager of the UI Athletic Association, beginning a connection with the university which lasted more than 30 years. He was named assistant business manager of the Athletic Association in 1929 and became business manager one year later. He served both as ticket manager and business manager until 1942, when he was named executive director of the Alumni Association, in which capacity he served until retirement in 1960. Since that time he had devoted himself to family interests. He was a partner and manager of Bowen Farms in Delphi and Green Top, Mo. He also continued to serve the UI on a volunteer basis, working with the Grants-ln Aid program. He was a member of the UI Foundation and its Presidents Council. In 1978 the foundation established a C. E. “ Chilly” Bowen Endowment Fund to assist undergraduates interested in careers in university administration. A substantial contribution was made toward its organization by Bowen, his wife and sister, Hilda Bowen of Delphi. During commencement exercises in May 1979, Bowen was presented the UI Board of Trustees Distinguished Service Medallion in recognition of his long and dedicated service to the university. Five years earlier he had been presented the Alumni Association’s Distinguished Service Award. Bowen was active in Champaign- Urbana community affairs, serving as president of the Champaign Chamber of Commerce in 1939. He was a Paul Harris Fellow of the Champaign Rotary. A member of the Champaign Unit 4 school board, he had been county chairman for the March of Dimes and director of the Community Chest. Bowen had served on the board of the American Soybean Association and was a founder of the Land of Lincoln Soybean Association in Urbana in 1964. He was active in fraternities and was a member of the Masonic Lodge and Shrine, American Legion and was a past president of the Champaign Country Club. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Champaign. Surviving with the wife and sister are two daughters, Jane Dickey of Lakewood, Colo., and Patricia Rancatti of Bayfield, Colo.; and six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother. Memorials may be made to the church or the C. E. Bowen Endowment Fund in care of the UI Foundation at Champaign. Delphi Carroll County Comet November 26, 1980
