Katie Hoaglan (Smith)

Attorney Wm. C. Smith, received a telegram Saturday morning from his son, William, at Miami, Florida, announcing the sudden death of his wife. Mrs. Smith was formerly Katie Marie Hoaglan. She was born in Washington Township, Carroll County, Indiana, September 12th, 1902. She was graduated from the country schools at an early age, and then attended the High School at Bringhurst and Flora, and later the High School at Delphi, from which she graduated in the class of 1920. For two years she was a nurse at the Methodist Hospital at Indianapolis. While attending school at Delphi, she met William B. Smith, a young volunteer soldier of the World War just returned from service, and who had re-entered High School and graduated with the class of 1920, and to whom she became betrothed. She married Mr. Smith on June 2nd., 1923, and they located in Chicago, and both were employed in the office of the Pioneer Press Company for more than a year. Then after a brief residence at Delphi, and Monticello, they located at Miami, Florida, where she died August 31st, 1925, aged 22 years, 11 months and 19 days. She was a woman of ability and refinement. She is survived by her husband, father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. William Hoaglan, two brothers and a sister, a host of relatives and friends who mourn her untimely departure. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at two o’clock at the Methodist Church. Rev. R. O. Kimberlin, of Lafayette, who united Mr. and Mrs. Smith in marriage two years ago, officiated. Rev. C. L. Harper, of Lafayette, former pastor of the Delphi Methodist church, and father of Mrs. Gwin Smith, assisted. Burial was in the Masonic cemetery in Delphi.
