Charles Wood

Charles A. (Chilly) Wood, 75, 602 Riley Road, Delphi, former mayor of Delphi, died Monday night, Feb. 14, 1977, at 10:59 in Home Hospital where he had been a patient since December 18.
  Born July 12, 1901, at Delphi, his parents were William H. and Mary Opal Cartwright Wood.  He married Opal M. Berry Dec. 24, 1923, in Monticello and she survives.
  Mr. Wood was Mayor of Delphi 17 years, City Judge four years and City Councilman three years.  While Mayor he fostered the flood control project, began the improvement program for the water works system including the water works building.  He was responsible for beautification and redevelopment of Riley Park and Riley Park Annex.
  He was a lifetime member of the Delphi United Methodist Church where he had served as chairman of the board of trustees, Sunday School superintendent and was active in many other capacities of the church.  He and a committee had just recently completed a current history of the church.
  He had held several positions in local and district Boy Scouts including being a member of the board of Three Rivers Council.  In 1953 he was awarded the Silver Beaver Award which is one of the highest honors in scouting.
  Mr. Wood was a member and past president of Delphi Rotary Club and in 1955 was named its "Outstanding Citizen of the Year".  In 1947 he received national recognition for his service to Rotary.  He has served as director and president of the Delphi Chamber of Commerce.  He was a member of Carroll County Old Settlers Association where he was permanent director of research.  He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Delphi and had been active with youth in the Little League Program.
  Mr. Wood had been employed by the Carroll Telephone Company for 50 years and was retired.
  Survivors with the wife are three sons, Charles A. Wood, North Hollywood, Calif.; David A. Wood, Delphi, William A Wood, Ventura, Calif.; two brothers, Robert W. Wood, Delphi and John C. Wood, South Bend; ten grandchildren and one great grandchild.
  Funeral services will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Delphi with Rev. Donald Ashley officiating.  Friends may call at Thompson Funeral Home from 6 to 9 this (Wednesday) evening.  Memorials may be made to the United Methodist Church.
